Is St Julian's or Sliema better?

St Julian's has more restaurants and nightlife; Sliema is calmer with better transport and the Valletta ferry. They adjoin each other, so you can stay in one and walk to the other.

The prettiest evening walk in the area: luzzu boats, cats on the rocks and two dozen restaurants from casual to serious seafood.

St George's Bay is the local sandy beach; Balluta and the lidos along the coast give you sunbeds, pools and swimming straight off the rocks.

Nightlife on your terms

Paceville is Malta's late-night hub, while Spinola and Portomaso offer wine bars and rooftop terraces if you want the calmer version.

Business and events

Portomaso and the surrounding hotels host most of Malta's conferences, and the area has the island's densest cluster of coworking-friendly cafés.

When to come

Late spring and September are ideal: sea warm enough to swim, terraces open, no peak-season queues. Summer is lively and loud; winter is quiet with mild days and low rates.
